Testing matters for understanding the truth.

why I chose this topic?

Until early 2023, Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce their L3 autonomous driving system in the upcoming 7 Series, which means that L3 automation is gradually coming to the masses. For safety and ethical reasons, the presence of humans in the decision-making loop is necessary and indispensable when automating the driving process of a car. Therefore, research on how to incorporate human choices more naturally and effectively into the automation process became the topic of this study.

This study conducted three rounds of testing and each with 12 participants to understand the human and design factors associated with process of perceiving information, understanding information, and predicting the next step. The ultimate goal of this research is to contribute to the development of safer and more humane L3 autonomous driving modes.

Drivers' Perceptibility Pattern

Based on our analysis, we found that the optimal location for information display is in the vicinity of the driver's eye level while driving in their natural seating position. We also created a diagram of drivers' perceptibility trends, which shows that the darker the color, the more visible the content is.

By referring to the Hall's proxemic zones and architectural space criteria, we defined the size of the distance zone for each of states. The faster the workers move and the more heavier object they pick up, the larger the distance zone is.

During the Optimal Operational Zone Exploration phase, we found that the best area for operation is the bottom left. The closer the tap is to the bottom left, the better the reachability. We created a visibility diagram to illustrate this finding.

After going through the entire process of designing, conducting, and analyzing the research, I have gained a deep understanding of utilizing the three levels of situation awareness to evaluate task performance and workflow efficiency. This skill and knowledge have honed my ability to think critically and conduct future usability testing with a more diverse and informed perspective, enabling me to make more insightful and meaningful recommendations for improving user experiences in interactive systems.

The whole prototype is designed with a static and middle-tune color background. In the future, it would be worthwhile to explore the perceptibility of the elements in a dynamic background, which can offer another perspective to the guideline of designing for the situation awareness.
